Hello fellow Apogee speaker owners and lovers. I need your help, please.
My changeover from the DAX crossover to the Audyssey crossovers for my Mini Grand subwoofers has revealed an issue with one of the sub's drivers.
The driver experiences over-excursion of the cone or possibly the voice coil, causing the driver to make a squawking sound. This only occurs on deep bass tones with Blu Ray movie explosions.
I pulled it out to see what model of the Vifa driver it is, but it is unmarked. There was no obvious trauma visible with the cone, or the foam surround. I also noted that the driver was built into a mounting plate that is square in shape, with rounded corners. It doesn't appear obvious as to how or if the plate and driver can be separated.
First, can anyone tell me the model number of the driver, so I can get a replacement from Madisound? I have a wood shop so I could recreate the driver's mounting plate if necessary. Of course, I'd rather not have to do so much work if I could avoid it.
Second, based on my description of the problem, does anyone have an idea specifically what the issue is? I seem to remember reading about this issue on the old forum, and there was a reported fix.
Third, would it be worth repairing the original driver?
Any suggestions are appreciated,
Steven.
