Apogee audition in NYC?

Postby TerryNYC on Mon Jun 10, 2013 3:39 pm

Hello to all,

I am working on a history of modern design and am paying particular attention to the high-fidelity consumer electronics section as this is always particularly abysmal in the standard works. I am trying to hear a few historical benchmark speakers to make certain time has not burnished them too brightly in my memory.

I have appointments coming up to hear ESL-57, Carver Amazing Platinum IV, and a request out to an audiophile society for anyone with Quad ESL 989, 2905, or 2912. It occurred to me to post here to see if there are any Apogee Scintilla or Full Range owners in NYC and if so would they allow an audition.

If you are such an owner or know of one your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Terry

I know of some Duetta Sig owners in the area - Long Island, about an hour outside of NYC. One set newly and fully restored, a second with updated crossovers, and a third in original stock condition.

Just a suggestion - a listen to product restored in the last 5 years or so would be more indicative of performance potential...

Take care - Graz

I second that!

I have the before-and-after-comparison on two apogee models (scintilla and studio grand) and the difference is huge
I highly recommend the parts from graz and the services from the two installers i know (henk from the netherlands and frank from switzerland): thank you for your devotion and passion for our beloved apogee speakers 8-)

Cheers, christoph

My Duetta Sigs are still located in Brooklyn, but they're old stock (with ribbons from the 1990s, and not even of the same exact vintage) - and as Graz says, hardly represent what Apogee sounds like at its best today.

Yes, I'm hoping to hear a pair in good condition. A member of a local audiophile society believes he knows a Scintilla owner in the area who would allow an audition. I'll find out this weekend.

Unfortunately no luck finding Scintillas in good repair in NYC so far. If you know of anyone with a pair please put us in touch. Your help is greatly appreciated. Terry
