Bass ribbon rattle

Postby dazzdax on Sat Nov 14, 2020 6:37 pm

Hello friends,

Is it normal that the bass ribbon of my Apogee Full Ranges rattles with some bass rich tracks like "Angel" from Massive Attack?
I hear this each time I play this track and I'm 100% sure that the rattle is coming from the bass ribbon of the left speaker and not from the right speaker.
It's funny, I have always thought the rattle was coming from the wooden blinds I have in the living room, which also serve as listening room, heheh.

Hi Chris,

I suspect that your bass ribbon has lost some tension, and it is just loose enough to cause this problem. Tightening the tension, or replacing the ribbon, would probably eliminate it. I had a similar problem with my Diva's. The frame has a slight warp, that I was able to fix by using a threaded rod and two nuts to "push" the warp back straight to reset the tension.

Good listening,
Z

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I will ask Henk (van der Hoeven) to re-tension the bass ribbon.

He should be able to fix it for you.

Dazzdax,You can retension the bass ribbons yourself. All you need to do is slacken off the recessed screws holding down the spring loaded clamp and this should automatically retension the ribbon assuming there is a large enough gap between the clamp and the adjacent fixed piece, then retighten the screws.
