Is this the sealed version or the one with the hole at the back or the front? If it is sealed box maybe it is not hermetic any longer and as the pressure is high inside the speaker it might pop a little.
Otherwise, maybe, yes something is coming off in crossovers.

I have a pair of centaur majors. It has a sealed enclosure for the bass driver. AFAIK, it is the next generation Slant range (Slant 6 and 8) which have ported enclosures for the bass drivers. But I am not sure what is meant by popping. Perhaps the owner can take a recording (using a handphone should be good enough) of the popping and post it here or somewhere so people can view and hear it. My Centaur Majors are bought new more than 15 years ago and the bass enclosure seams are starting to split. But it doesn't pop and still plays fine. I wonder if it could be the bass driver rubber surround having disintegrated and the cone is now bottoming at loud transients. I suggest the recording might possibly help explain the problem better and I am sure many here will be able to help from there.

Hi,
It could be a problem with your amp, bad connections, or output transistors on the way out can cause popping sounds, usually actually DC pops, not good for the speakers.
If you can borrow a DC meter with a peak hold, you could leave it connected on the speaker terminals and see if it registers anything when you hear a pop.

Hello Mdenny
At a guess;-
1) Speaker that is popping has a fracture on the ribbon trace, probably under the clamp on one end of the board.
2) Speaker that is dimming could have the ribbon burned/attached to the rear fabric!!! Be real careful with this, it could be a fire risk...
Only a guess!
Take care - Graz

http://www.apogeeacoustics.com/repairsa ... bbons.htmli can absolutely recommend graz' ribbons.
you won't recognize your majors after the installation of the new klm5 ribbons. at least that was the case after the replacement of my original, working and still good looking ribbons in my studio grands. i didn't think it could sound better but i stand corrected...
i also own the centaur majors. very good and very underrated speakers
cheers, christoph
