With such a well known iconic brand as Apogee Acoustics, it is surprising how few people have actually heard a pair of the real speakers. Yet those who have seem to set their sights on owning a pair some day, and are curious about their options. Room size, budget, and partnering equipment all factor in the question, and many of the online opinions seem to centre on theory rather than experience. Generally most associate Apogee with the larger planars they have always been associated with, but for those seeking that but without the budget a pair of well preserved Apogee Acoustics Centaur speakers can bring a lot of pleasure, and play in smaller rooms. If the full planar experience is where you are focused – your options have never been better. Buying into Apogee planars in 1999 was a risk when the brand was dropped by a/d/s, but soon after we took over taking care of Apogee speakers, actively repairing since early 2000.

We have established repair centres in various places around the world to take care of the early classic Apogee planars and hybrids, and call those people “Installer-repairers”. Along with us here in Australia they have had a high percentage of the original production speakers go through their service. The basics would include full dismantling, cleaning, re-foaming and repairing with new ribbons and panels, all made from the genuine original foil types. Ages board work is repaired as required. For many the addition of metal framework, new grills, crossover and aesthetic upgrades are undertaken, transitioning an already good original speaker to top one-percentile speakers of all time today. We have trained the Installers in classic restoration procedures, and all use our cnc made ribbons since the start, but as the restoration speakers are usually restored for discerning clients limits associated with the original production are routinely exceeded.

Whilst it is true that for most a pair of fully restored classic Apogee planars will exceed all of their expectations, some may wish to go further. For that reason we have been making metal chassis Apogee Acoustics planars since 2004. These speakers certainly are not for everybody, and few have experienced them. But for those that want the absolute best planar speakers of all time, we make them strictly to order – only available via Apogee Acoustics directly at present.
