My Big Amp

I heard this amp driving a pair of Dutch Audiostatic electrostatics, speakers I had heard several times with different amps.
I was quite impressed with what the amp did and expressed it to the owner.
When later he offered it to me for sale, I did not hesitate and grabbed it.

It is a private build, and frankly nothing was known about it by the seller in this case by me.
It is really big, and weighs 35 kg. It has a Class-A switch.
I am impressed by the build, three levels high, at the bottom 8 big electrolytic capacitors per side.
[after a closer inspection using an endoscope it turns out there are 8 electrolytic capacitors per row. 2 rows per side, total for both sides 32!]
Left and right are for as much as I can see fully separated.

So no power figures to brag, but I measured power consumption which I think is fairly modest: about 55w in AB driving the Centaurs and just under 300w in Class-A.

I've had a brief listening to the Centaurs with a lesser CD player connected and no sub. The sound is okay, stable, wide, relaxed. In Class-A I could go with the volume knob to about halfway without any strain and had in my perception a very good listening volume.
I think it will do well with the Calipers.

Let us know how it goes. I'm a big believer in big power supplies and a lot of caps.
Good Listening,

Shortly after I acquired the amp I moved. From there all sorts of events and tragedies took priority and it took me a long time to get the living sorted and start work on the acoustics. I had been lucky with my previous homes that did not have acoustical issues I now know.

I had put the speakers in probably the most worse and wrong position first and after changing that I started to enjoy listening little by little again.

Image

In the image you see the panels I put up against the wall, they are named 'silent lines'. Apart from being stylish, they are claimed to be of acoustical benefit. At first I put a few on strategic spots in the room, and they worked miracles. There are other solutions but with these all I have to do is unpack them and put them against the wall. Basically people will fit them on a wall but this way I can move them around or take them with me. With the reverberations brought down to acceptable levels I could start listening to music again.
(Sometimes though the massive feedback from the solid wall was an experience, if I could ignore the reverb).

I experienced the big amp as powerful. For serious listening it 'needs' to be in Class-A what makes a big difference to the sound. Basically I keep the volume regulator at 12 o'clock and adjust the volume on the Transporter.

I thought my other amp did sound a bit more subtle and a little less powerful. But I was able to get good levels of sound in my previous room of well over 50m2 or (500ft2).

About 2 months ago I put it in the system for reference. After three years it needed a break-in of a day. At lower volumes it sounded much sweeter, even to the point of me thinking it was colored. When going louder I noticed that a volume level that was good for the earlier, larger room, was insufficient for the current, smaller room. You'd think in a smaller room you need less power but not here. The same goes for the sub-woofer but I understand that for the large wavelengths not really fitting in the room.

Also when playing louder I noticed some strain, both in Class-A and AB. It is rated to do about 25 watt in Class-A and 186 watt@4 ohm in AB and switching from A to AB does not make it sound better.
While I had the other amp on, I moved around the Centaurs to try to get the best image.
After two weeks I really longed for putting back the Big Amp.

That first time listening to Big Amp again really hit me, the difference was huge! It is much more powerful, I have no figures but it has to be a lot more than the 25 watts from the former amp. I think what most counts is the delivery of current.

I listened to Helen Donath singing 'Das himmlische Leben' from Mahlers fourth symphony and it became at that moment an almost holographic experience. I guess I also was in the right mood for it.

When playing the beginning of 'Time' from the Pink Floyd album 'The Dark Side of the Moon' I experience it as being inside the clocks (they recorded actual clocks for this). This with the volume on the Transporter open and the amp at 12 o'clock.

In general listening to it I think there's nothing wrong but it could be more subtle or refined. Depending on the level of the tracks, before '12' it is a little more at ease and over '12' there can be some strain. On Mahler 4 I went to 10 past 12 and that's my limit.

I don't have too many references with high-end amplifiers. I did listen many hours to other very good speakers driven by tubes.

I am happy with it but at the same time wondering what could be a next step. I like tubes but it's got to be a hell of a tube amp for an Apogee. And you have to replace tubes. As for solid state amps there are so many I would not know where to start.

Hey Van,
Sorry, I had sort of forgotten about this thread but finally stumbled back to it. I had originally thought you were going to use the Big Amp with Calipers for some reason. At any rate, it sounds like you are moving 'forward. In my experience, some high power amps don't always have a sweet upper end and can be unsubtle at times. My big Krells, 750mcx's, are both powerful and still extremely nuanced.
Are you leaving them on all the time, or just in Standby? I fine leaving mine on all the time does add some sweeter, smoother sound. Very subtle, but noticeable.
Glad it was a step up for your system.
Good listening,
Z

Hi Z, thanks for your reply.

You are not in the wrong, I had wanted to use the Big Amp with he Calipers. Due to the circumstances, they are still crated, no point in setting them up if the acoustics don't work. But now things sound a little decent I am thinking of unpacking them and checking them out. But still the ribbons need to be replaced anyway.

As with all electronics, I disconnect the amp completely when not listening. There is no standby on it.

Yes it is definitely a big step up and I am not complaining, just nit picking on a high level.

We all nit pick, don't we? I've just sent my turntable back to Oracle for another upgrade, something I had thought I was through doing, but....
Anyway, glad you feel like it was a good step up. Hopefully you will like the Calipers with the new amp when you finally re-ribbon and get them setup.
Good listening,
Z

Sadly the Big Amp is history. After a steep decline I couldn't stand it anymore and disconnected it. I got in contact with someone who was in contact with the builder and he says that probably the transistors are done. They are hard to get and due to age and health considerations the man doesn't want to be involved anymore. Remember it is a unique and one off build by someone who really knew something about amplifiers, not just an amateur project.

Well tears have flown upon the realization it was over and a search for a new amp began.

This wasn't easy, high end amps have grown very expensive and on the second hand market at least over here prices remain high. Often a fortune is asked for an amp 20, 25 years old or even older. As if they don't age.

One of my wishes was a tube amp. As a kid I listened to an old tube radio and later, I spent many hours at my cousin's place listening to his tube amps and I liked it.

In the mean time I connected my old Advance Acoustic amp but one neighbor went berserk so I removed it. The other neighbor by the way had no problems at all but this is an angry woman, a Karen.

Later, when I was desperate to hear my music I set up my TV system, the simple Mission book shelve speakers but with upgraded filter and Jantzen caps connected to a modest Marantz amp and after the second day Karen was at it again.

I never had any troubles playing the Big Amp at a bit of volume. My good neighbor kept assuring me they did not hear it. Apparently there is a difference between Hi-End and other. I've been informed the Big Amp would put out only 50 watts but they were real watts fed by the 32 caps deep in the chassis.

Anyway finally I got me a PrimaLuna tube amp. I had these on the radar about 10 years before and the company assured me they could handle an Apogee. But due to circumstances, they deal went off.

I have the version with eight output tubes. Originally they are EL34 tubes but the previous owner had put in (the certified) KT120 tubes, good for 89 watts in Ultra-Linear mode.

The PrimaLuna is a no-brainer, just read the reviews. It has auto-bias, protection against failing tubes and shorts on the speaker terminals. It is hard wired so if anything fails it can be repaired without too much of an effort, I think and hope.

Still, it took me a lot of getting used to, as the sound is of course very different from my old Class-A amp. One big difference is, the PrimaLuna is more between the speakers, where the Big Amp would be wider than the speakers. Nevertheless I am very pleased with it, discovering new things. I can listen for hours while it effortlessly plays. It is not the big revelation I've had before when replacing equipment, that's just how good the modest looking Big Amp was.

I have set the volume knob on 50% and control it with my streamer. On a quiet Sunday afternoon in a quiet house my good neighbor will barely notice the 'Pink Panther Theme' by Henry Mancini at -5 on the streamer.

The good thing is, the PrimaLuna doesn't have to be pushed to sound good and enjoy listening. I always wanted to push the Big Amp. (I have been able to resist the temptation so far, usually I don't care about slam but occasionally from a good recording ... but I'd have to check if Karen's not home, that's disturbing.)
